From Famitsu - Translated by Elmer the Pointy

Iwao: Blacksmiths are Disciples of the Hand who use metals to create and repair weapons and armor. Miners are Disciples of the Land who dig up ore. These classes will have very limited battle-related abilities, but may receive other things to compensate. For example, a Blacksmith may get an ability that enfeebles a gold-based enemy or one that increases the chances of having treasure drop.

That looks really interesting. Makes me wonder more about the mechanics behind switching classes. Hopefully it doesn't end up being "Ok who's going to be the Miner for our loot this time?" *Nose Goes*

Maybe a Miner will have a passive ability close to a THF's Treasure Hunter, where being/having a Miner in your party increases the chance of ore drops?

Hmm.. a Miner seems like quite the interesting class.
Tool is a pick axe (sounds like it hurts).
Miners are unparalleled at throwing rocks (Getting hit by a darksteel rock at MLB pitching speed sounds like it'll hurt... alot).
Miners have the skill to debilitate(weaken) their enemies with mineral compositions. (Sounds like one hell of an annoying ability).
Seems like the Miner sounds like a NIN with a pickaxe. Minus the shadows, they have throwing, enfeebling by the use of mineral compositions (I'm guessing different powders will make different effects), and poky weapons.
Give them TH and we got ourselves a pretty nice Farming/debuff class.

That's actually an interesting concern. All Disciplines have access to Guildleve quests, plus ways of level grinding. DoW and DoM can grind mobs, DoH can grind recipes, and DoL can run around mining/fishing/harvesting. Now, I'd assume that most people's "main" will be a DoW or DoM. Some will "main" a DoH. Very very few would play a DoL as a "main"; I assume it mainly to be a secondary role (most people assume that of DoH too).

Point is, if all of the DoW and DoM players are running around with a pickaxe in their backpack, grabbing mining points as they adventure along... doesn't this hurt DoL who are trying to level? The FFXI equivalent is if a party is trying to EXP on crawlers, and I run in as a lvl75 with THF sub and start farming all of their exp mobs for silk. By grabbing mining points out in the world, we're essentially stealing DoL's "exp mobs".

What most people are saying from the beta is that mobs respawn quite fast, so it really shouldnt be much of an issue hopefully

Very valid point Pav. Maybe (hopefully) SE has thought of this, and maybe introduced areas that focus on material gathering as opposed to mobs? For example a cave that has many mining points, but not enough mobs to warrant a party setting up camp in there?

Also from the videos I've seen and reactions I've read, the landmass is very, very large. So unless they're planning on jamming a ton of people on each server, there must be places that are going to be relatively empty.

Ahh true. Even FFXI did this to an extent, with zones like Yughott Grotto, Movapolis, Ifrit's Cauldron, etc. While those did have a number of mobs in them, EXP parties steered clear of them. Though of course that brings up the whole "can DoL survive in zones without a DoW/DoM class to protect them" discussion.

This might be epic, in the fact that might actually have more fun with playing a miner than an actual combat class haha.
